Activated Charcoal is charcoal that has been processed to make it extremely porous (contains lots of empty space). This gives it a large surface area to enable the adhesion of molecules to its surface, a process called adsorbtion. Activated Charcoals ability as an adsorber makes it great for use in filters for treating air and water.

Activated Charcoal is often called Activated Carbon.
